It was the new contractions that woke her, and Sarah jumped, feeling drugged and disoriented. And then the baby gave a little cry, and she remembered.

The cord! She should have cut it! She reached across, feeling for the knife with her fingers, and then sat up, uncovering and turning the baby because she remembered that she had to cut the cord about a hand’s width from its navel. And after that, before she could pull it gently to help the bloody lump come out, it came out anyway, and she picked it up quickly with the bracken leaves and threw it in the fire, because Sarah did not want rats anywhere near this tiny life, and she was so tired now that she knew she was going to sleep heavily.

Then slowly and with considerable discomfort, she put more wood on the fire, moved to the mattress she’d made, settled herself and the baby down and pulled the warm cloak over them both, before falling asleep, completely content for the first time since Robert had left her.
